September Garden and Farm Chores

  • Collect and Save mature dry seeds from non-hybrid varieties. Seal in airtight containers, label, and store in refrigerator or freezer.
  • Direct Seed in Garden: Spinach, leaf lettuces, parsley, cilantro, chinese cabbage, turnips, kohlrabi, radishes, green manure cover crops (crimson clover, white dutch clover, hairy vetch, annual rye)
  • Transplant: Divide and replant Egyptian Onions, Perennial herbs and flowers
  • Harvest: Green Beans, tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, carrots, crowder peas, celery, radishes, okra, dried beans, eggplant, winter squash, pumpkins, salad greens, arugula, lettuces, red raspberries, blueberries, apples, watermelons, herbs
  • Dry herbs and flowers
  • Mulch perennial beds, fruit trees, and berries
  • Clean up garden debris and add to compost pile.
  • Now is the time to make sure you have hay or other sources of feed for your animals for winter. If you wait until the last minute it will be more expensive as well as difficult to find!
  • Make sure to have ample water supply for animals and plants as September is usually a dry month for most states.
