Garden:
- Enjoy the Harvest
- Flowers in the garden provide food for bees and pollinating insects, and shade for vining crops in the mid summer heat, but most of all they give us beauty and joy!
- Direct seed in garden: Collards, kale, mustard, lettuces, Oriental Greens, salad greens, carrots, Chinese cabbage, daikon radishes, kohlrabi, turnips, parsley, and cilantro
- Transplant: Broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts
- Allow some green peppers to change color and fully ripen before picking..
- Harvest Vegetables at their peak ripeness and freeze, can, or dry. Make herbal vinegars.
- Harvest: Tomatoes, tomatillos, cucumbers, okra, corn, peppers, onions, carrots, green beans, yellow beans, spaghetti squash, summer squash, acorn squash, butternut squash, melons, blackberries, blueberries, basil, chives, thyme, oregano, mints, sorrel
Livestock:
- Check water daily! August is still a hot month and you do not want your animals dehydrated!
- Use work animals in the early morning for the severest of work.
- Rotate pasture for milk cows as an occasional change of pasture is good for the fields as well as the cows. Make sure if your pastures are short or the grass is dead or dry that your cows are getting plenty of feed.
- It is usually best to wean colts and calves in August or around four or five months of age if they have been allowed to run with their dams. Remember it is normal to see a drop in weight when the animals are first weaned.
- Wean lambs this month or next in time at least allow the ewes to get in good condition for wintering. You may need to milk the ewes for a few days if they are suffering from an engorged and/or caked udder.
- Feed hogs well. They will work the better and be in good condition to fatten.
